From the first scene to the last, the author manages to craft a very tense and suspenseful read. The tone is much darker than the second book, with the life and fate of the human protagonist always hanging in the balance.

...And the descriptions of her transformation to the other side and her heightened senses felt so realistic. I wonder though, how come she never suffered from any of the horrible ill-effects that Connie had to go through in her own journey to the dark side in the 1st book
